DAKSHA 2020

The highlight of G.C.T.E College Union, SARGAM’s activities was the organisation of DAKSHA 2020 – an intercollegiate fest spread over January 24, 25 and 28. The idea of this mega fest and its’ planning had started since late October 2019 while brainstorming about when and how to conduct the intercollegiate fests in a novel manner. The sweat and tears of many a student was behind the success of this event. DAKSHA was a new format introduced to B.Ed training institutes – a combination of sports, brains, entertainment and let’s not forgot food! A promotional video made by one of our students was released prior to the fest DAKSHA involved six events which included two sport competitions – Football (Kick Off 2020) and Cricket (Master Blasters), a Quiz (Jignyasa), Science Exhibition (Paryaveshan), Film Fest (Celluloid) and Food fest (Mammamia).

This mega fest was made more memorable with the complete student involvement. SARGAM was able to organize the entire student body together as one. Special committees, under the leadership of each Union Office Bearer were set for the proper working of various spheres such as the Sponsors Committee to find sponsors for events, PR team for advertising the fest, Refreshment team to provide fresh and energizing refreshments to the players, Medals and Certificates committee, Food fest committee etc. Under the leadership of the sports secretary, even the fixtures for the sport events were set up by the students themselves. Sponsors were found for the winners as well as the runner-ups trophies, and for other necessary requirements. This can be attributed to the efforts of the committee set up for the same. Every committee put in their 100% effort to their duties and ensured that the Green Protocol was followed to the dot with no plastic use in the campus

Football was a new event introduced in GCTE by SARGAM due to the popular demand from the GCTEians themselves. Each game was played for 30 minutes keeping in mind the very hot climate, time and physical capabilities. Cricket was played in the 7’s format for the same. The two days saw a competitive fight in a sportsmanship spirit. The players were further boosted by the enthusiastic cheering from the audience, making all matches full of excitement. Each team, in football and cricket, brought in their uniqueness, strength, skill and performance. Many close calls left the audience with abated breath and holding onto their seats in a sort of roller-coaster ride.

Adjacent to the field, food stalls were set up by different optionals. From the Nadan Thattukada, named Ruchikada to the Juice Parlor, a variety of food items were sold using a token system. All the food items had been prepared by the teams themselves and the wafting flavour scents attracted many to try out various dishes which ranged from egg lollipops to kappa & beef, from freshly cut fruits to peddas & chaat. The science exhibition organized by the Physical Science and Natural Science students brought out the rich history of GCTE as well as acted as a hands on information centre for the visitors and the hordes of school children from nearby schools. The Film Fest ran 4 short films and 2 feature films over the two days which were much appreciated by the audience. The quest for knowledge, like everything else of value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be thought for, worked for and studied for. To encourage the intellectual growth of student-teachers, SARGAM organized the inter-collegiate quiz competition, which helped burn the curiosity of GCTEians too along with the participant teams. A wide response was received from the start of this mega event. Curious passer-by’s also poked their heads in to watch the events and take part in the food-fest. The success of the event was felt first hand when the same visitors brought in more visitors. It was not just college students but also school children, teachers, officials and other non-related public who thronged the college grounds making way for a wholly big fat Indian celebration, with loud music being blasted from the speakers, laughter and freely flowing conversations with entertainment around.

The whole hearted support of the College staff and students, under the leadership of our Chairperson, Staff Advisor and the Principal, the experimental event was a huge success. Our success was even more felt when positive inspiring feedback was received not just from the participating colleges but also from the other B.Ed. colleges and educational authorities who were keenly watching this first-of-its kind programme. Many were impressed with the organizing and left with the promise of enacting similar fests in their own institutes in the coming years.
