Community Camp 2021
Working with Community helps to understand and appreciate the problems of the community and gives the chance to think about possible solutions. The camp provides ample opportunities to fine tune the interpersonal relationship skills of the campers through the process of group dynamics. Through this assignment campers try to explore the models of group work and community organization, the types, principles, values, skills and techniques used during the camp. There are opportunities to spread awareness, information, interact, and organize programmes for the community during the camp. Camp provides students with a community of caring adults, who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. The outcome brings in self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect build personal competencies. These personal competencies are reflected in the four "C's" of the camp community: Compassion, Contribution, Commitment and Character. These qualities will help to build a successful nation and a civil society. The teacher students develop a sense of community, develop intergenerational relationships, and learn through first-hand experiences.
In accordance with the Kerala Government College of Teacher Education held the community camp for the II B.Ed. students from January 20 to January 22, 2021 at the U.G.C. Hall in the college premises. The raging Covid 19 pandemic proved a challenge on how to conduct the camp as before. However, the entire institution came together to conduct the same is a safe and fulfilling manner, keeping with the Covid 19 protocols.
THEME OF THE CAMP
The 2021 community living camp of G.C.T.E, named ‘Sradha’, was themed as YOUTH FOR PREVENTION AND MITIGATION. Sradha etymologically means ‘to be alert’. Alertness is key in these troubling times, whether it be a rampant virus or the never failing natural disastrous phenomena that never fails to make their presence known every year. Each new year, people wish and pray for a better year, but sadly, the past couple of years have been situations moving from bad to worse, right from the burning of the Amazon to that of global lockdown in 2020.
The current world scenario is one where every second counts. Teachers need to be alert, literally and figuratively. The focus of the camp was to build able young next gen educators who can adapt and respond to any situation that calls for them as well as be able to transact the state of preparedness to the younglings they will be handling soon. No one can stop the fury of unseen forces, but we can be alert enough to reduce the effects. We can choose to be able to re-build.
Awareness is Smartness.
Alertness is Intelligence.
Advanced Preparation is Innovation.

PLANNING
The 2021 camp session was quite different from its previous versions. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing lockdown and safety protocols, a live-in camp could not be organized. Also, there was a dearth of time to plan as the camp was announced in the middle of the exam season and had to be conducted the very same week too. Despite the difficulties faced, with the help of faculty members, a well-organized camp was planned and conducted by the II B.Ed. students of G.C.T.E from 20th January to 22nd January 2021.
The convenor of the camp was Dr. Rajeswari. K, Principal, GCTE, Thycaud. Dr Kumar V, Asst. Prof, Department of Tamil was the co-ordinator of the camp. Dr. A V Sujith, Vice Principal and Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Dr. V K Santosh Kumar, Asst. Professor, Department of Social Science, Dr. V K Shobha, Asst. Professor, Department of Educational Technology and Smt. Shiba T C, Asst. Professor, Department of Sanskrit were the assistant co-ordinators of the camp. Former experienced camp co-ordinators and staff members like Shri Rahul etc were also part of the camp.
The students were organized into various committees based on their areas of expertise with specific leaders and members. The consolidated list of the duties allotted is mentioned in Appendix 1 Various competent and established speakers and trainers of the required fields were brought in to handle each session effectively and efficiently. The camp was a mixture of online and offline sessions, the first of its kind. A new era of community camp dawned with Sradha.
REFLECTION OF DAY 1
The two sessions of the first day were taken by eminent personalities in their respective fields. It was a highly productive day. Right from the inaugural address, we were able to glean not only extra knowledge on the related topics but also become more aware of our roles in the society. Session 1 provided the inspiration to be a teacher who wins the hearts of the students by encouraging them as well as rebuking them when required. Session 2 gave a practical insight to problems counsellors face with students and as educators, how to deal with them effectively. An educator should be a person who can wear different caps as called for. We should be a guru, parent, sibling, friend, spectator, mentor, police, neighbor, citizen & whatever else the child requires us to be.
REFLECTION OF DAY 2
The sessions of Day 2 were of practical nature. Both the sessions showed us the importance of teamwork, co-operation, acceptance etc. During session 3, we learnt to recognize our potential. We identified our unknown strengths. We realized that if we work together, even the most herculean tasks, can be completed. As we raced against time for the short film creation, we learned to become creative with the least of props and time. Session 4 was also of a similar nature. Both the Art teachers, stayed true to their profession and taught us the nuances of inculcating theatre into the classroom and subjects. When we think of a teacher, we are reminded of our own school days. These sessions gave a practical explanation of how to make lessons more interesting and more child-centered. An educator is only successful if they can transact the lesson effectively to all students. For this, they should engage all the senses of the child. Theatre is the most effective way for this transaction. It gives the educator lessons on gesturing, voice modulation, scripting even the most boring and dry lessons in a fun and interesting manner.
REFLECTION OF DAY 3
The final day of the camp was a mixture of theory and practical sessions. Session 5 invoked the poet in each of us. Shri Girish Puliyur wove threads of fine poetry through 3 hours and none of us even felt the time passing by. His session made us think about the scope of poetry as a medium and teaching style. The beauty of language, be it literature or mathematics, is an undermined one. Yet, language remains the most important component of the social animal a.k.a human. An educator should be able to enrapture the learner like a poet enraptures the listeners and readers. Poetry is elegance personified. Session 6 was a culmination of all the preceding sessions. It had art, theatre, mental health, constitutional awareness and a dose of poetry. It was the perfect ending session for a camp. One of the major takeaways from the session was the ability to create aids out of waste and normal household materials.
VALEDICTORY FUNCTION
The valedictory function of the community living camp “Shradha” - Youth for Prevention and Mitigation organised by the Government College of Teacher Education, Thycaud started around 4.45 PM. The session started with a prayer. Sinimol Skaria, Department of Malayalam welcomed the gathering. Dr. Rajeswari. K, Principal, GCTE, Thycaud, Dr. A V Sujith, Vice Principal and Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Smt. Shiba T C, Asst. Professor, Department of Sanskrit were the assistant co-ordinators of the camp and Vinayakan V S, Department of Geography addressed the gathering. Certificates were distributed to the participants of the camp. Sreenath G, on behalf of all the students gave feedback of the camp. Dr Kumar V, Asst.
