INTERNSHIP PHASE 2

All students can learn and succeed,

but not in the same way and not in the same day.

William G. Spady

The second phase of teaching practice for the students of G.C.T.E began on January 25, 2021. As per the revised instructions from Kerala University, we were to take 15 school based lessons and 15 peer based lessons. Our faculty, however, advised us to take as much school based lessons as possible for better experience. I was able to complete 22 school based lessons, online, over the given period and 15 offline based lessons for our juniors, I B.Ed..

SCHOOL BASED LESSONS

NAME OF THE SCHOOL: Government Model Boys H.S.S, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram

CLASS: VIII B

SUBJECT: Social Science

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 10

TOPICS: i) Water on Earth
ii) As the Torrential rains poured down...
iii) Social groups and Social Control

Due to time constraints, this phase round, we had to make do with ICT based learning aids and comparatively lesser number of models and charts. Also, the internet connection throughout the online session kept fluctuating despite changing various networks. Outside the technical side, the entire session progressed well.

Day 1

The first day back to online class was surprisingly easy enough. An introduction to the chapter Water on Earth was given, with emphasis on the concept that Water is life. From this we revised the water cycle taught in the last phase once more. I was able to take 2 lessons as my colleague was on leave.

Day 2

Today, we learnt in detail about the movement of water through the soil. Concepts such as porosity, permeability and percolation were introduced. The formation of underground water, water table, aquifers etc. were analyzed and discussed.

Day 6

Todays topic was based on the topic 'Conservation of Water'. The concepts of rainwater harvesting and recycling of water was discussed. The students themselves came up with conservation measures without prompting.

Reflection of the week

The first week back to class was satisfactorily successful. Compared to the previous phase, my students as well as myself, got into the schedule pretty easily. The only difficulty we faced was the time slot for the lessons. Morning 7.30am seems too early for the kids as many had to be called up to join class. All the classes were interactive and highly efficient. The drawback of phase I, time management, has been completely overcome. Our only issue this phase is the lack of sufficient possible aids and activities. However the discussion method is working pretty well. All the students are eager participants of these classes.
As a teacher, I am also calm and able to efficiently handle the lessons without digression and proper content knowledge while facilitating the learners to build new knowledge from their previous knowledge. Discussions have a tendency to go wild but I have been able to keep complete control over the class despite it being an online platform.

Day 7 - 12

A new month and a new chapter. Today we started learning 'As the torrential rains poured down..'. The first lesson on the chapter was an introduction to natural phenomena. The students were taught to differentiate natural phenomena, hazard and disaster.

The lesson progressed into the 2004 tsunami and 2018 flood in Kerala.
